GERTRUDE STEIN
OPERA
In June 2000,
The Word Works and Encompass New Opera Theatre commissioned
Gertrude Stein Invents
A Jump Early On, a new music opera with words by Karren
LaLonde Alenier and music by William Banfield. Nancy
Rhodes has served as dramaturg. A workshop drawn from Act
I was presented in Chevy Chase, Maryland, in July 2001 with
an audience of 150 people and media coverage. Composer Banfield
completed a working draft of a voice and piano score for
Acts I, II, and III in August 2001. Public previews of the
work-in-process opera took place in 2002 in New York City
at the Manhattan School of Music and the Cultural Project
Theatre. The premiere of Gertrude Stein Invents A Jump
Early On took place June 15-18, 2005. See steinopera.com
for details. Visit
scene4.com for monthly articles by Karren Alenier about
the process of developing a new opera. Also learn more about the process of how this opera was developed at The Steiny Road to Operadom blog.
The Word Works thanks
everyone who has made a contribution to this project.
